Alghero was built around a fortified port, founded around 1102 by the Genoese Doria family, due to its strategic location in the Mediterranean Sea.With the exception of a brief period under the rule of Pisa (1283-84), the Doria ruled it for centuries.It was captured by the forces of the Crown of Aragon under Bernardo de Cabrera in 1353; the indigenous population was expelled in 1372 after several revolts,[1] and Alghero was able to grow later thanks to the arrival of Catalan colonists.Alghero became a King's City (ciutat de l'Alguer) in the early 16th century and prospered economically.The Catalano-Aragonese were succeeded by the Spanish Habsburgs, whose reign, which ended in 1702, brought the city some stylish elegance.Alghero and Sardinia were given to the House of Savoy in Piedmont in 1720.Around 1750, a wide channel was dug to improve the peninsula's defensive position.Famine in 1821 sparked a populist uprising, which was brutally suppressed.Alghero was demilitarized at the end of the century, and during the Fascist era, part of the surrounding marshes was reclaimed, as were the suburbs of Fertilia and S.M.La Palma was established.Alghero was bombed during World War II (1943), and its historical center was severely damaged.In the 1950s, malaria was finally eradicated from the countryside.
