Carfax Tower is all the remains of a historic Oxford church, St Martin's, built in the 13th century and demolished in 1896 for traffic purposes. This tower has the best view of the lovely Christ Church College just down the hill. The tower still has church bells and there's a fancy clock on the outside with figures chime the quarter-hour. It is also likely that committee conferences were held in the mass before a dedicated city hall was built.
