The White Cross is housed in a renovated cotton mill warehouse that was once part of the Storey's Cotton Mill, which was built alongside Lancaster's main canal.Just two hundred meters away, near where the current South Road bridge crosses the canal, an original stone white cross was discovered. It can be seen on the first map of Lancaster, drawn by Speed in 1611.Visitors came to a halt and expressed gratitude for making it safely across Lancashire. Before going about their business in the city, they most likely stopped for a drink and some food.Storey's Mill, which was built between 1854 and 1880 and is now our pub and restaurant, was used to store raw materials for the manufacture of oilcloth, linoleum, and other chemical products, which contributed to Lancaster's wealth and reputation as one of the North's most lucrative industrial areas.A major renovation of the Storey's Mill area in 1987 aided in the transformation of the former industrial boundary into what it is today. The warehouse was reconstructed so that it could be used as a pub, which our team took over in 2004.We are a small, independent team that has built our company from the ground up by taking care of our loyal customers and providing them with world-class food and ale.Wherever possible, we use local products. Our meat, for example, comes from the Vale of Lune and the Cumbrian hills, our vegetables from the South Lancashire plains, and our fish from Fleetwood.Over 80% of our ales (up to 20 different rotating beers each week) are brewed within 40 miles of our location.
