The Fountain is one of Gloucester's oldest known sites associated with the brewing industry. In the time of Henry III, it was owned by Peter Poitevin, who was most likely the bishop who crowned the young King at St Peter's Abbey (now the Cathedral) in 1216.By the early fourteenth century, it was almost certainly an inn.The name comes from around 1672 and refers to Trinity Well, a nearby water source on Westgate Street.Another royal connection is commemorated by a plaque in our attractive courtyard: a visit by William III, who allegedly rode his horse up the stairs to show his contempt for Jacobite rebels meeting there. The Fountain is a classic pub with a wide selection of real ales and delicious pub fare.
