In the year 1788, Waxy O'Connor was born in Smithfield, Dublin City. His profession as a candle maker earned him his name.He is best known for his voracious appetite and proclivity for hard liquor. It appears that he was not alone amongst his peers in their love of and ability to consume copious amounts of beer and whiskey. The justification for such excesses is that candle makers had to work in such high temperatures that they were depleted of both energy and fluids.“Such heat does parch a man - a parched man is a barren man - and beer is the only cure......ah, us lads could put away gallons in a day!” Waxy O’Connor was overheard saying. The ‘Waxy O’Connor’s tree,’ which was planted 250 years ago in Midlands Ireland and died naturally in 1994, appears to be an unknown elixir. The pieces were hewed by a local woodworker who grew up playing around the Beech tree. They were then shipped to England and ‘planted’ in Waxy O’Connor’s in August 1995.
