Mold Castle' was a fortification designed by the Norman de Montalt family in the late eleventh/early twelfth century. It has over the next hundred years the site changed hands many times as control fluctuated between the Welsh and the Norman-English. It was built on a natural glacial mound and was made up of two baileys plus a motte. The motte is 180 meters in diameter and 40 feet long, with a 60-foot top.
