St Martin's Church is a 1,000-year-old church located in the middle of modern Exeter. It is one of the town's oldest buildings, consecrated a year before the Norman Conquest, and once was one of six churches clustered in the shadow of the cathedral. It is the most significant and complete church in the centre of Exeter, having escaped both Victorian refurnishing and the bombing of the Second World War which severely damaged many other churches in Exeter. Its bright, white Beer stone windows, the roughcast exterior of red volcanic stone makes it look a little like a fancy gingerbread house.
