Carmarthen Castle' is a Royal property in the early twelfth century and used by the King to ensure he had a strategic base amongst the territory of the Marcher Lords who dominated South Wales. The castle slighted after the Civil War to prevent further military use. The castle converted into a prison in the 18th and 19th centuries, and the building of the Council. The remains of the castle were given a Grade heritage listing in 1954 and is currently a tourist attraction and site of the town's Tourist Information Centre. The earliest castle, built by the Norman William Fitz Baldwin.
