The Three Tuns Lodging House was the name of the Crystal Palace in 1654.The pub had an extra floor at the time.In the early 1850s, the Crystal Palace, as we know it today, opened in that old lodging house, its name commemorating the Great Exhibition held at The Crystal Palace. When the old Three Tuns was demolished, the wood paneling in the left bar (where Nelson is thought to have stayed when it was a lodge) was salvaged. The top floor was removed around 1935, leaving roof marks on the gable end of the building.According to legend, while digging a well in the back yard to supply the brewery with water, a worker discovered a hot spring, which was capped on the condition that the corporation provide a free supply of cold water.Several skeletons and a Roman mosaic were discovered in the cellar by the landlord in 1981.The mosaic was not moved, but rather preserved beneath a layer of polythene and sand. It's still down there today... Admiral Nelson, who's drinking in the bar to the left of our two?If that's the case, you're not alone. When the building was a lodging house, Nelson is said to have stayed there.
